3 feared killed as church collapses in Edo

A week after the fatal building collapse in Lagos

involving the Synagogue Church of All Nations, another

church building has collapsed in Benin City, Edo State.

Three persons were feared killed and two others

injured, on Friday, when a structure of the Christ Chosen

Church of God located on Usama Street, Uzebu Quarters

came down on them.

One death was confirmed while the fate of the two other

victims who were trapped under the rubble as of the

time of this report was unknown.

Saturday Tribune learnt that the structure, which was

being used for official and residential purposes, had

been marked for demolition and it was in the process of

being taken down when it collapsed on the labourers

doing the job.

Five of the nine labourers were said to have just stepped

out to eat when structure fell on their four colleagues

who remained inside.

One of the victims was brought out of the rubble dead

while the two others, who were rescued alive, after an

operation that lasted about three hours, were rushed to

hospital.

The remaining two remained trapped under the rubble,

raising fears that they might have been killed.

Angry residents set a bus belonging to the church

ablaze and destroyed the main church auditorium.

The mob blamed the church for using manual labour to

demolish the building instead of bulldozer.

They also accused the leadership of the church of using

unskilled labour for carrying out the demolition
